What Rotterdammers Value About Their City
The city's own DNA statement names three traits it wants Rotterdam to be known for: rauw (raw, unpolished), ondernemend (entrepreneurial) and internationaal (source: rotterdam.nl/dna, official, 2026). Residents largely agree with that self-image: in the municipality's 2025 Omnibusenquête, the words Rotterdammers used most to describe their own city were "wereldhaven" (world harbour), "divers", "direct" and "trots" (proud), and roughly 7 in 10 said they're proud to live there (source: Gemeente Rotterdam, Omnibusenquête 2025).
That pride sits alongside real, openly acknowledged concerns. The same survey found crime, unsafety and drug nuisance as residents' top priority for the city to fix, ahead of traffic, pollution and housing, and the municipality's own biennial Wijkprofiel 2026 shows city-wide scores for safety and social cohesion have slipped compared to four years earlier, even as residents' self-reliance and civic participation have risen (source: Gemeente Rotterdam, Wijkprofiel Rotterdam 2026). It's not a city that only tells visitors the flattering half of the story.
One thing worth correcting: tourist guides often present "Geen woorden maar daden" ("No words but deeds") as Rotterdam's official post-war rebuilding motto. The city's own DNA page credits it to Feyenoord, the football club, as its anthem, not to the city, and the phrase is documented as a general Rotterdam port-city saying dating back to around 1870, predating the 1940 bombing it usually gets tied to. Rotterdam's actual motto is "Sterker door strijd" ("Stronger through struggle"), adopted in direct reference to the bombing and reconstruction (source: rotterdam.nl/dna, official, 2026).
