Coming up in Rotterdam

De Babyboomerbiljoenen: Jona van Loenen at Arminius
Debatpodium Arminius, Museumpark 3, 3015 CB Rotterdam
Jona van Loenen is an economist, columnist and Head of Research at fintech Gain.pro, a regular guest on Dutch talk shows including Vandaag Inside. He is also a genuine Rotterdam enthusiast: captioning a photo series of the city on his own Instagram, he wrote "Rotterdam, de mooiste rotstad die er is" (Rotterdam, the most beautiful "rotstad" there is, a nickname locals use with affection, not insult), a post that drew over 2,000 likes (source: instagram.com/jonavanloenen, 7 August 2026). On Friday 25 September at 20:00, he discusses his book De babyboomerbiljoenen, on the widening gap between Dutch baby boomer wealth and younger generations, in a panel with historian Arend Jan Boekestijn, ABN AMRO Chief Sustainability Officer Sandra Phlippen and political strategist Bas Erlings. The venue sold out with no waitlist; remaining tickets, if any, tend to circulate on Ticketswap (source: arminius.nl, official venue, 2026).

30th Anniversary Year: Erasmus Bridge (1996–2026)
Erasmusbrug, 3011 BN Rotterdam (Nieuwe Maas)
In 2026, Rotterdam celebrates 30 years of its most famous architectural landmark, the Erasmus Bridge. Officially opened on 4 September 1996 by Queen Beatrix and designed by architect Ben van Berkel (UNStudio), the 802-metre cable-stayed bridge transformed the city by connecting Rotterdam Centrum with Kop van Zuid. Affectionately nicknamed "De Zwaan" (The Swan) for its 139-metre asymmetric pylon, the bridge serves as the visual centerpiece for Rotterdam's major events. Throughout 2026, the anniversary is marked with special architectural tours (including guided visits into the bascule chamber with OMI during Dag van de Architectuur) and cultural events tied to the Erasmus Year theme "Bruggen Bouwen – Verschillen Overbruggen" (source: openrotterdam.nl & dagvandearchitectuur-rotterdam.nl, 2026).

The three-day event features free ship tours, high-speed naval and emergency response demonstrations on the water, tugboat displays, and maritime career exhibits. The highlight takes place on Saturday evening, 5 September, with a spectacular nighttime show and fireworks display over the river Nieuwe Maas in front of the Erasmus Bridge. Most harbour basin events are free; excursion tours require advance booking (source: wereldhavendagen.nl, official organiser, 2026).

De Rotterdamse Kerstmarkt, normally held at the historic Oude Haven, did not run in 2025 for organisational reasons and has been announced to return in December 2026; the organiser's own site had not published exact 2026 dates as of this writing (source: derotterdamsekerstmarkt.nl, official). Frequently Asked Questions
What is the biggest annual festival in Rotterdam?
North Sea Jazz Festival is Rotterdam's largest, held every July at Rotterdam Ahoy. The 2026 edition (10-12 July) marks its 50th anniversary, with more than 1,000 musicians performing across fifteen stages over three days.
When is Rotterdam's summer carnival?
Rotterdam Unlimited, also called Zomercarnaval, takes place in late July in the city centre. The 2026 main days are Friday 24 and Saturday 25 July, with a free street parade starting from Blaak at noon on the Saturday.
When is the Rotterdam Marathon?
The NN Marathon Rotterdam runs every April. The 2026 edition, the 45th, took place 11-12 April, with the full marathon on the Sunday and shorter distances on the Saturday. Check nnmarathonrotterdam.nl for the next date.
Is Metropolis Festival still happening in Rotterdam?
No. After 35 years in Zuiderpark, Metropolis Festival was cancelled following the loss of its municipal subsidy for 2025-2028, and there was no 2026 edition.
Are Rotterdam's festivals free to attend?
Many are. Dunya Festival and most of Rotterdam Unlimited's daytime programme are free, and North Sea Jazz Festival is ticketed. Christmas markets are typically free to enter, with paid food and drink stalls.
Is the Jona van Loenen event at Arminius sold out?
Yes. The 25 September 2026 panel discussion at Debatpodium Arminius, built around Jona van Loenen's book De babyboomerbiljoenen, sold out through the venue and has no waitlist. Any remaining tickets circulate on resale platforms such as Ticketswap.
Why does Jona van Loenen's message about inherited wealth matter?
His book argues the Netherlands is shifting from a society where work determines wealth to one where inheritance does, an "erfocratie". Dutch households stand to inherit an estimated 240 billion euros over the coming decade, concentrated among baby boomers whose children face a different housing market and pension outlook (source: arminius.nl, 2026). Pairing him on stage with a historian, an ABN AMRO economist and a political strategist reflects how far the debate over generational wealth has moved into the Dutch mainstream.
